School Risk Evaluations
When a student faces suspension or expulsion, a careful evaluation can show what drove the behavior, what risk it actually signals, and what support would reduce it.
Schools have to act when a student's behavior raises safety concerns. The decisions that follow, such as suspension, expulsion, a change in placement or conditions for return, often rest on assumptions about why the student acted and whether it will happen again. A psychological evaluation tests those assumptions with evidence.
Dr. Tutty provides expert testimony in matters involving school risk, for example following a suspension or expulsion. His background includes more than 2,300 evaluations or treatment of children and adolescents, many with ADHD, autism or twice-exceptional (2E) profiles. These conditions can shape how a student's behavior looks to staff, and they are easy to misread under pressure.
Questions a School Risk Evaluation Can Address
- What was going on for the student around the incident?
- Do attention, learning, social-communication or mood difficulties help explain the behavior?
- What do the student's history and current functioning suggest about future risk?
- Were the student's needs being met under the existing school plan?
- What supports, services or conditions would make a safe return more likely?
What the Evaluation Draws On
- Interviews with the student and family
- School records, discipline reports and any existing 504 plan or IEP
- Information from teachers or school staff where appropriate
- Standardized testing of cognitive, attention, executive, social-emotional and personality functioning
- Prior evaluations and treatment records
How Findings Are Used
The written report and testimony explain the student's functioning in plain terms, address the risk question directly, and make specific recommendations the school and family can act on. In hearings or court proceedings, Dr. Tutty can testify to the findings and the reasoning behind them.
A Word From a Forensic Colleague
“Protecting children has always been his primary mission, and he has never wavered regardless of who or what agency might be on the warpath. I highly recommend him, especially those tough forensic cases.”
